“Back in the Winter of Ooone Nine”

We recently posted to Facebook that someone needs to rewrite Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69” as “Winter of ‘19”. Our good pal Scott Reddinger (of Y is for Yooper and Chat It U.P. Podcast fame) really pulled though. Why the winter of 2019? To date it has been the snowiest winter in over a decade with more on the way. It is the winter that childhood winters felt like.

Our question of Bryan Adams, who’s Canadian, is why wasn’t the original song the Winter of ‘69?

Winter of ‘19

By Scott Reddinger

We got our first real snow storm,
Right ‘round February time.
The drifts were over top my head,
Was the winter of oooone nine!

Me and some guys from school,
Grabbed some shovels and we tried real hard.
Toivo Quit, Eino got buried,
I should’ve known we’d never get far.

Oh, when I look back now,
That winter seemed to last forever.
And if I had the choice,
Yeah, I’d never want to be there,
Those were the worst days of my life.

Ain’t no use in complainin’
When you got a job to do.
Spent my evenings with a Yooper Scooper,
Now my back is screwed, yeah.

Standin’ on your mama’s porch,
You told me that we’d shovel forever.
Oh, and when you held my hand,
We both screamed, “F this weather!”
Those were the worst days of my life.

Oh yeahhh!

Back in the winter of oooone nine!, ohhhhh!

Man, we were killin’ time,
we were cold and exhausted,
We needed more beer and wine.
We learned winters can last forever, forever, no? Yeah!!

And now the weather’s not changin’,
Look at all the snow that’s coming along.
Sometimes when I pull out the snowblower,
I think about life, wonder what went wrong.

Standin’ on your mama’s porch
You told me that we’d shovel forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
We both screamed, “F this weather!”
Those were the worst days of my life.

Oh, yeah!

Back in the winter of oooone nine, ohh!
It was the winter of oooone nine, ohhh yeah!!
Me in my snow boots in ooone nine,
God noooooooooo!!
It was the winter, the winter, the winter of ooone nine, yeah!

Thanks for being you Scott Reddinger.
